Railroads represent an important aspect of New Mexico's development. The historical maps held by the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library illustrate land development, water rights, settlements and many more aspects of territorial and statehood development. The relatively large number of rail companies is attributable to several factors: a receptive territorial legislature, a need to transport newly developed resources around and through the area, and anticipated land sales, did much to advance the development and construction of railroads. As specified by territorial law, each railroad developed their own maps, valuation charts, track charts, rights-of-way and incorporation documents.
