Between the Lines
Between the Lines: Culture and Cartography on the Road to Statehood comprises a powerful, widely used, and complex form of communication. More than geography, maps also mark historical development and much of the economic, political, social, cultural, scientific, and intellectual circumstances of their times. They have helped people define who they are, where they are, and how they move about. In short, maps have helped to chronicle and to make history. The cartographic examples presented here date from the mid-sixteenth century to the present and celebrate not only the 100th anniversary of New Mexico statehood, but the fascinating history leading to becoming a state and the lives and achievements of its diverse peoples. These maps tell the stories of the land and its physical and political definitions, of its native people and the arrival of and interaction with Europeans, Mexicans, and Americans, of the New Mexico Territory, and particularly of New Mexico as a part of the United States.
